The origin of the phrase

"England's green and pleasant land" is from the last line of the poem Jerusalem by the 18th Century English visionary poet and artist William Blake.

Jerusalem

by William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time,
    Walk upon Englands mountains green:
    And was the holy
Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen !

    And did the
Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills ?
    And was
Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills ?

    Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my Chariot of fire !

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
    Till we have built Jerusalem,
    In Englands
green and pleasant Land

I enjoyed the reference to William Blake's Jerusalem. That was our school song in high school so I know it well! Enjoyed your site!

Rebecca, Inspired by your zone, I have started a mini zone where I will be showcasing a different zone each week. Along with some of my own writing, of course. Your travel England article is this week's winner. ( Friday to Friday of each week.)

Rebecca Martin. I live in US (WV) but I am fascinated by England. I credit the English Poets for that! For that reason alone, to find mention of places I know because of what I have read, I would be reading and browsing your zone. Yet, there is more. The short film of the bus tour is interesting and I watched every bit of it. Are the buses double deckers? We have none of those? EMoore Good Job. I
